vg show / vg show arch

Explain a single code node: what it is, what it calls, what calls it, and its architecture role. vg show arch opens the same graph as a local, interactive architecture map; vg show savings opens the live compression savings page.

Overview

vg show gives you the full picture for a single node: its kind, file location, signature, importance score, architectural area, the functions it calls (callees), and the functions that call it (callers). For functions and methods it also shows the architecture classification produced at build time — the node's architectural role with a confidence band, its purposes, and a one-line description of what it does, written from the symbol's own name, class, types, callees and doc summary (converts Product to ProductDTO, checks whether User exists by email). Purposes are scored from what the body's code calls — store reads and writes, outbound HTTP, file I/O, auth, messaging, rendering, scanned from the source and never run — before what its names claim, so a controller that writes the store shows persist, its description reads the run in order (validates SKU, writes Product via SaveChangesAsync, returns 201), and a boundary violation line names the crossing when the hexagonal policy forbids it. Uncertain symbols are marked abstain rather than guessed; classes are not classified.

Usage

vg show <name>
FlagDescription
<name>Qualified name, short name, file:line, glob, or id
--pick <n>Pick the nth candidate when multiple nodes match

Examples

vg show UserService
vg show src/auth/login.ts:42
vg show "UserService.createUser"

vg show arch

vg show arch opens a local, interactive architecture map of the same graph in your browser, after vg build (or a bare vg).

vg show arch # vg · arch http://127.0.0.1:7420
vg show arch --focus UserService # open the map on one symbol
vg show arch --no-open # print the URL without opening a browser
FlagDefaultDescription
--port <n>7420Port
--host <h>127.0.0.1Bind address — loopback by default; binding elsewhere prints a warning
--focus <name>—Open the map on this symbol
--no-open—Print the URL without opening a browser
--json—Print the URL and counts (symbols, rule breaks, missing steps), then keep serving

The map draws the same facts as vg show, vg path, and vg impact so a person can walk them:

  • By job — handlers, guards, services, models (Architecture module on)
  • By cluster — the graph areas
  • Who calls whom — call edges only
  • Missing steps — a call exists in source but not on the map
  • Problems — architecture-rule breaks, each anchored on a line

With the Architecture module loaded — it is installed by default — the map paints jobs and "reads data / writes data" chips from graph.arch.json. Without it, the map is the raw graph: it never guesses. Scroll or drag to move around the map; pinch, Ctrl-scroll, or the + / − buttons to zoom. The page is served inline from loopback with no external assets, and q or Ctrl-C stops it. vg show chart is the spelling this shipped under before the module got its public name; it still works as a silent alias for one release.

vg show savings

vg show savings prints (and with --open, opens) the URL of the live savings page served by vg serve --compress — the browser view of what vg savings reports in the terminal.

vg show savings --open

1. Upgrade EOL runtime in node-turborepo
End-of-life runtimes no longer receive security patches and block ecosystem upgrades.
./.
>=18.0.0 → 24.0.0 (6 majors behind)
Impact: −10 drift points (runtime & EOL)

2. Fix security posture: no lockfile found
Without a lockfile, installs are non-deterministic. Run the install command to generate one and commit it.
./
Missing: package-lock.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, or yarn.lock

3. Upgrade Vitest 1.6.1 → 5.0.3 in @repo/api (+2 more)
4 major versions behind. Major framework drift increases breaking change risk and blocks access to security fixes and performance improvements.
./apps/api
Vitest: 1.6.1 → 5.0.3 (4 majors behind)
./packages/utils
Vitest: 1.6.1 → 5.0.3 (4 majors behind)
./apps/admin

Impact: −5–15 drift points

4. Reduce dependency rot in @repo/types (100% severely outdated)
1 of 1 dependencies are 2+ majors behind. Run `npm outdated` and prioritise packages with known CVEs or breaking API changes.
